  • I want to buy Thief but I will only buy it if it is totally free roam

      Loading editor
    • no, there are city free roam areas in between missions, this is not a sandbox game

        Loading editor
    • As Sxerks says, it's free-roam within the city and during individual missions, but locations can become inaccessible after you complete a mission.

    • Right. I will not be buying it then. I just like my games to have free roam after the credits so I can get more playtime with it without starting a new game. Tbh I was exspecting it to have the same free roam options as Skyrim or Assassin's Creed. Thanks for answering

    • The new thief game? Once you complete the story it dumps you back in the city to just roam and do jobs and stuff. Doing the chapters unlock more of the city though but afterwards, the game just lets you roam and do what you want. You can repeat chapters too.

    • There are also ways to open up short cuts on the 'Thieves' Highway' rooftops, lower ladders, and draw bridges.

    • please don't compare Assassin's Creed to a stealth game >_>

    • I was not comparing Assassins Creed to Thief. I was saying that I expect Thief to have the same free roam options Assassins Creed

    • Buy it. Now.

    • I bought it 3 hours ago and can't turn it off

    • Honestly I think its a really good game. Better than Thief 3 even, which I think it builds off of (at least for gameplay). The main story so far is ok (more interested in the back history stuff though, and nods to the old series).

I can't say its better than the Thief I and II however.

    • I hate the ruins. Can't complete that section

    • It surprises me when people say it is better than Thief 3. NewThief wishes it had the atmosphere and plot of Deadly Shadows.

    • There are certain gameplay choices that I think improve over thief 3, but not an improvement over thief 1. There are some choices that are a step back.

Story is definitely a step back. It does a better job of showing the scope of the city, thief 3 was often claustrophobic. But thief 3 is not to the level that thief 1 and 2 portrayed the scope of the city, which made it seem much larger. New Thief somewhat brings back the scope of the originals.

    • I can't but compare new thief to the city in Wolfenstein 2009 though... It had similar feel of open sandbox city exploration.

    • (I'm the same person as above.)

Each to their own, of course. If people enjoy NewThief, good for them. As for me, I'm really not getting much out of it. I like some gameplay mechanics and I'm liking that facelift for Garrett--they really got right his facial attributes (not his personality though).

Roaming about The City is fun, I agree, but the plot is so poorly constructed and lacking in rich lore, that overall those setbacks kill the magic for me. Here's where Deadly Shadows compensated for the small maps and feel that's it a worthy sequel in spite of its flaws.

Side note: on a gut level, I really miss Eric Brosius' music.

    • I agree the plot is definitely the weakest point. Especially towards the end when it basically collapses on itself.

    • Well i  wished thief was free rome that would be amazing and in a way i beat the game but it let me return tto the games to complete the side mission so in a way its free roam

    • Hmm... odd, for me Thief 3 is the worst of all - mostly because of the problems it has. Like when you load it re-throws down on the floor everything, swords and such, so you can raise suspicion just by loading. Also the worst of all is the transition between the sections - the section you are leaving is just freezing, so you have to observe and time it really well if you intend to return and not run into enemies you cannot hide from. Luckily T4 is better at this. T4 also does not have infinite loot and items in the city hub (as T3 does, which makes the shops pointless). What I do not like in T4 is that it does not provide the necessary tools. What I mean is that in T1 and T2 you can do full loot without purchasing anything, just by using the tools you are given at mission start and find during the mission. T3 has infinite items, so it does not matter, you only have to buy the glove. But T4 requires to stack on rope-arrows in the shops if you want to go full loot and does not have enough in the missions either. I'm Garrett, I don't want to buy things... in shops... yeuch. It also laughs in my face, that it gives me a side quest I cannot even complete full loot, because I need a razor... which i cannot buy yet at that point. But in other aspects... T4 is really good.

    • T4's swoop is also better imho than the bunny-hopping in T1/2 along the rugs :). That felt a bit ridiculous to do. Guards are bit more realistic too with the point-of-view, in T1/2 you can run face to face to a guard and airborn-blackjack before they are alerted... not in T4. And if the guards pair up, you can't do chain-blackjacking either... So I'm doing ghosting in T4 mostly, it feels it is way better done and encouraged than it was in older Thieves. Leaning is quite good as well.
